Chakotay never imagined that when he left StarFleet that he would serve as first officer on Starship Voyager. But events conspired against him as his Maquis crew, complete with two spies--was pulled into the Delta Quadrant. Agreed to merge his crew with Voyager's and step aside to allow Janeway to take the lead. Integrating the two crews wasn't always easy, but Chakotay formed a fast bond with Janeway--one that would remain unrequited--as the pair led their people home.
Born of mixed Human and Klingon races, B'Lanna Torres grew up insecure about her Klingon features and temperament. When she applied to StarFleet Academy, her inability to comport to the organizations rigid structure caused her to drop out of the academy in her second year. She found a place for herself amongst the Maquis Resistance group, working to defend those who were displaced by the new borders established between the Federation and Cardassians. When her crew was pulled into the Delta Quadrant, her time serving on The Starship Voyager helped her continue to grow into herself as she eventually learned to accept her Klingon heritage and start a family with Tom Paris.

By the time Kes met the Voyager crew she had only lived for two years, but waa already an adult in her society. Kes was a member of a group that believed her people, The Ocompa, were meant for more than a life underground where a Caretaker met all their needs. She also beleived that her people had the potential for great mental powers as the legends told. Leaving home to join the Voyager Crew gave her the opportunity to reach that potential as she evolved beyond her physical form into a non-corporeal being of unlimited feats.

While working undercover on a Maquis ship, Tuvok was pulled into the Delta Quadrant along with the rebel crew. His loss spurred Captain Janeway's rescue mission into the Badlands, which also carried her crew 70,000 light-years from home. When the two crews united, Tuvok would have been next in line to replace the recently deceased first officer, but Janeway decided on enlisting the Maquis commander, Chakotay, as her second-in-command. The Vulcan was not offended by this decision as he did not have the emotional capacity for jealousy. His time in the Delta Quadrant would go a long way toward helping him understand alien emotions, thanks in no small part to the influence of the Talaxian, Neelix.
When Captain Kathryn Janeway took on a rescue into a dangerous area of space known as the Badlands for her ships first mission, she had no clue the trip would end up 70,000 light-years from home. Trapped in the Delta Quadrant she must combine with a contingent of the Maquis resistance and work together to find a way home. Through their seven-year journey they cross huge swarths of space, make first contact with numerous alien species, and fight off The Borg as they ultimately find their way home.
